Fernando_TorresHe was signed in July 2007 by Rafa Benitez for a club record fee of Twenty million pounds from Atletico Madrid – his hometown club where he spent 11years and was handed the No. 9 jersey previously worn by the Liverpool faithful, Robbie Fowler. He is nicknamed ‘El nino’ but his is Fernando Torres.

Before now, I was not a huge fan of El nino. He had always been a player I respected but never one of my favorites. But after watching his form this season especially against Hull city, I must say he is worth all the noise.

It seemed like a typical headline – Fernando scores a hat-trick against Hull city in the 6-1 thrashing of Phil Brown’s side. But having watched the game; the hat-trick headline does not accurately reflect the quality of the goals he scored – goals that need to be seen than described.

It was a game that had everything: 7 goals in total, poor defense, excellent passing, passion, ‘good fouls’ etc., but El nino stood far above the rest for me! I watched him play the previous week and was impressed by his performance scoring two out of the three goals that gave his team the win over West Ham united. Liverpool wasn’t really deserving of anything other than a draw from a neutral’s perspective in that game but they have Fernando Torres in the line up so that changes things.

On Saturday, Hull city defenders may have capitulated to the spell binding play of Mr. Torres, but his style of play and finishing is something to admire and potentially worrying to any opposition’s defense.

It’s his resilience towards goal that has captured my attention. He never seems to be perturbed that he has defenders (he’s almost never defended by one player) in front of him, regardless of their size. He seems to know where the goal and is not afraid to improvise to get the job done as was obvious in his first goal against West Ham united. His unrivaled composure in front of goal is absolutely brilliant, an attribute that will prove crucial in season defining games. He’s got such a pace over a short distance that is almost unstoppable for any world class defender. Watching him play as Liverpool spanked Hull city at Anfield was a delight.

Liverpool has been tipped to win the Premiership this season by pundits, but frankly I didn’t think they could. Not if they continued to make defensive blunders and open up gaps for opposing teams to potentially pounce on. But after watching El nino against Hull, he might just be the singular reason Liverpool would win the premiership, barring any injuries. And to think he’s just getting back to form makes me wonder what else can he probably have to offer?

El Nino has been known to be one the most exciting players in the Premiership and after his sterling performance against Hull City on Saturday September 26th, 2009, the 25 year old striker is without a doubt one of the best, if not THE BEST striker in the world.
