FIFA President, Sepp Blatter according to Goal.com UK, says today “Somebody put his foot there, what do you do? You do a little bit more than you should have done. Is this so terrible? I don’t think so. At least it’s not so terrible that we should intervene after a match.
“The disciplinary committee should not intervene on that. They should intervene on violent play” says Mr. Blatter.
I’m a little confused by this! Why does this sound terrible because it was said by Mr. Sepp Blatter considering he is allowed to have his own opinion? Maybe because he is the FIFA President – arguably one of the most powerful men in the world and anything he says will be scrutinized and dissected for some authority and direction.
Having said that, what would be regarded as a dive? Some ‘dives’ are actually warranted due to a defenders reckless act. And I guess the gray area for FIFA and the Mr. Sepp Blatter is when do you send out a committee hunting on foul play when there are more malicious acts of the field of play that warrant more attention? Good point.
But what happens when diving becomes a culture in the game and it tilts a World cup match in favor of a world super powers of football such as a Brazil against an underdog country such as Tanzania? What does that do the reputation of the game?
Should the disciplinary committee intervene on diving as Mr. Blatter suggested not? I don’t know but I do know it’s a potential threat to the purity of the game we all love. Diving is cheating. Plain and simple especially when it’s done in the 18 yard box. Endorsing it would be sanctioning Football as sport for the dishonest.
Something has to be done about diving, I think we all agree! Right now however, no one including Mr. Sepp Blatter knows how to tackle diving.
