Another typical game between these two teams; very physical, great saves and not necessarily a high scoring match but this time Chelsea takes the spoils.
As much as a lot can be said about Liverpool’s performance or none thereof in the 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, I think on the day we need to give credit to Chelsea’s blues especially, Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Nicholas Anelka & Henrique Hilario.
I was very impressed by Michael Essien in the midfield. He was all over the midfield and defense and that really choked Liverpool’s tactics. Didier Drogba as always is a handful to any team’s defense (provided he stays on his feet) and he showed why he is one of the best strikers in the Premiership, setting up the first goal and creating the second by twisting Jamie Carragher like a barbershop’s chair. Nicholas Anelka’s hold up play in parts of the game and his composure as he took his goal that separated both sides makes him a marquee player in this match.
There’s nothing like having a confident goalkeeper in between the posts and Hilario exhibited that in this game. He worked to keep a clean sheet pulling off some fantastic saves not including his aerial presence during set pieces.
There was something off about Liverpool performance against Chelsea. Torres seemed to be starved of that final pass that frees him to do what he does best in the 18 yard box where he’s most lethal! Steven Gerrard’s foray forward was not as prominent in this match as we’re used to. Liverpool were tamed to the back. Inexplicably so, considering it was always going to be an open game.
Third loss for Liverpool this season, this time to one of the title contenders makes you wonder if this is really the year Liverpool will clinch the Premiership?
