Following the 1-0 loss to the League leaders Chelsea on Sunday, Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher had this to say about his ‘stellar’ performance in the match especially the incident involving Ashley Cole:
“It was clearly not a foul,” he told the Manchester Evening News.
“I knew at the time and I have watched it again on the replay. I back-heeled the ball and Cole just jumps up in the air and the ref gives a foul.
“I think we are starting to see Mr. Wenger’s comments starting to influence referees which is a shame really.
“Now we have to raise our game and ensure these decisions are not affecting the game.”
It is absolutely appalling and ridiculously sad how the new Manchester United – after the departure of their master of creativity Cristiano Ronaldo – have sunk so low to the levels of lack of integrity.
It almost seems like this is a club decision championed by the manager Sir Alex Ferguson to pick on other people’s comments or complaints or mistakes to deflect from their own lack of results or showing. Since Darren Fletcher is the newly emerged influencial player in the team, he becomes the new voice of shame.
Stop blaming Mr. Wenger and The Referee and the Press for a poor performance that has defined United this season. What’s next? Blame the grass because it’s too green and too soft for your cleats? Or the weather because it was too harsh for your kits thereby slowing down your runs?? Yes this sounds ridiculous because that’s how ridiculous Manchester United sound when they blame someone else for their lack of stellar performance.
There were other decisions in that game that I thought shouldn’t have gone Manchester United’s way but it was obvious the referee Martin Atkinson tried to be consistent in his decisions and especially since he almost set the precedence of not cautioning every tackle.
The incident in question may have had an unsatisfactory outcome for United as a whole but the resultant corner should have been defended. Where was Fletcher or the rest of the ‘Champion defenders’ on that set piece? Well except from the Wes Brown who was rehearsing for the Oscars for ”The greatest fake fall in a football game” category, why didn’t they all get to the ball before John Terry? Take note Fox Soccer Channel it was not due to ‘Drogba’s brilliance’ sparked by the challenge from Johnny Evans.
Yes Manchester held the Chelsea midfield to ransom, but as the cliche goes ‘goals win games’ and believe it or not the scoreline is the most important part of the stats.
No comments were made by the players that Manchester United could only manage 2 shots on goal in the entire game!
It is an unfortunate shame! A shame that the Premiership Champions don’t really know how to lose like champions.
The analysis of the game is a concensus that Manchester United lacked creativity in the match against Chelsea on Sunday just as they have shown this season especially going forward. I dare to say they have not only lacked creativity on the pitch but also off the pitch in their after game comments.
