Sitting at the bottom of the league with 7 points from 13 games, the Board of Directors at Portsmouth’s FC have decided to let Paul Hart go.
A statement on their website quotes Chief Executive Peter Storey “Paul has worked under very difficult circumstances with the financial restrictions the club has faced since he took over. “However, the board feels that the team should have accrued more points to date and that we need a new man in charge to ensure Premier League survival.
“The board would like to thank Paul for his work not only in keeping the club in the Premier League last season but also for his time in charge of youth development.
“Paul is a man of great dignity and we hoped he would stay and help us develop younger players on the fringes of the first team. We are genuinely sad to see him leave. Everyone at the club wishes him well for the future.”
I think this is really a bad idea period. And this has nothing to do with the resume of the potential replacement manager.
I have watched at least 5 of Pompey’s most recent matches this season so far and as much as I agree that they shouldn’t be dwelling at the bottom of the league according to Peter Storey, I don’t think any team in the bottom half and relegation zone plays better than Portsmouth at the current moment.
Results aren’t everything in Pompey’s case. Stability is. Mr Hart has been the only stable character in stage play in the midst of the public joke Portsmouth FC has been in the last few weeks.
If Portmouth players was playing horrible and the fans had turned on them, this would be a perfect decision. If Paul Hart had all he needed to do his job, such as non-sale of most of their valuable players, a stable boss and a little bit of support from the powers that be with regards to communicating with the manager about things like the transfer embargo placed on the club by the FA, this would be just the right thing to do. If Portsmouths wasn’t in the quarter final of a domestic cup, i’d say kick him out ASAP.
This knee jerk reaction from the Pompey board reminds me of Newcastle FC last season and their successive journey through the managerial highway until they reached their final destination of the Championship. Not insinuating Pompey are going down that road but stability needs time to yield results. Unfortunately Mr. Hart being axed from his position throws in more instability which is what I believe has been responsible for their position in the league standing so far.
Avram Grant is being rumored to be the successor! Not a big fan of Mr. Grant even when he was at Chelsea. Don’t know what he’ll be able to do any better.
Can only wish Portsmouth fans all the best.
