Villa breaks into top four? – not so soon y’all

MartinONeillSMartin O’Neill and his Aston Villa side have been flying to say the least at the very moment going unbeaten in six games. Consequently, they’ve been tipped to be the team to finally break into the top four this season at the expense of a wavering Liverpool.

As much as it was a great pleasure to watch Villa beat Man. Utd at Old Trafford on Saturday with a very impressive effective performance, I think it’s too soon to name Villa as the new entrants to the top four kingdoms.

This is so reminiscent of last season when at some point Aston Villa seemed to have secured the top fourth spot in the league at the expense of Arsenal at that time. Every pundit on the Premiership earth ushered the Villans into the Champions league dome as early as January this year. Frankly Arsenal had a rough patch at that time even their fans feared Villa would be hard to bump off the top four spot.

Just as I thought then, I still think now that there are too many game still left to go and tipping Villa as the new top four team in recent years is just plain old premature.

With all due respect to the work Martin O’Neill is doing at the club, I just think they lack the strength to see it through. Villa can be compared to a marathon runner who starts off the marathon with an incomprehensible sprint but ends up walking at the final stretch of the marathon because he lacked energy.

The reason Villa will run out of energy again this season is the lack of depth and rotation in the side. There are a group of almost 8 or 9 players that are the core pillars of the team who play every game without any adequate replacements in the team squad. These players will eventually suffer from exhaustion and puff, there goes their top four ambition.

It’s just right to note that, Aston Villa’s run and high reached a crescendo in February this year and they ended up in the Europa league spot. Before the Villans are shown the entrance to the Champions league venues, the question needs to be asked – can lightning strike twice in March for the Villans?

Not so soon y’all, please.
