There’s a buzz in White Hart lane and deservedly so. They finally qualified for the Champions League after about more than two or three decades or so (irrelevant to this post) by virtue of finishing fourth last season.
Granted it’s an achievement for the club that was teetering on the verge of the relegation pit just about two years ago. It’s one achievement the Spurs fans should revel for as long as it lasts (which will probably be the first round of the Champions League group stages) and that should not be taken away from them even if the rest of us think it’s not worth the noise they are making.
The reason I decided to write this is simply because of something I noticed while watching parts of the Spurs vs Wigan game on Saturday. It was a game that almost everyone, certainly the Spurs fans was sure the boys in White tops and Blue shorts would win considering their opponents were the most leaky defense in the league so far this season losing with score lines you only salivated about. But as the game turned out, Wigan proof justified why they are also regarded as the most inconsistent team in the league.
Wigan came to White Hart lane to play ball and they brought the right boots with them. Spurs players on the other looked lethargic and understandably so after their midweek euphoria in the Champions League qualifying match and their subsequent qualification for the group stages.
I guess the fans forgot this so quickly because for periods in the second half the White Hart Lane faithfuls turned on their team and were booing. Really? Are you serious? This led me to think why on earth would you boo your team in this situation. Before I go any further, I understand the financial commitments fans invest in Football clubs and respect that wholeheartedly. I also believe fans should have a say in how their club runs it’s show.
My conclusions as too why the fans would boo their team in this kind of situation are: a high expectation level to a good game every week which ultimately leads to the second and most important reason, a false sense of entitlement.
Because your team has finally qualified for Europe’s elite competition does not mean you are entitled to a good game every single game day especially after an emotionally exhausting week. Because your team is drawn from a pot by several superstar football players does not guarantee you won’t play horribly in your next game to a very mediocre team in the Premiership. You are not entitled to sparkling, champagne football every single week. Your players are only human like ever other team in the Premiership even the best of them all.
You are not entitled to weekly victories now just because you qualified for group stages of the Champions league. Your team will have bad days and will lose games still. That’s the reality. You are entitled to reality nothing more. So get used to it. This will also happen in the Champions league by the way just so you are aware.
Come back to earth Spurs fans. Cut down the high hopes and expectations. Call back memories of two seasons ago when you were flirting with relegation into the Championship and appreciate where you are by showing it a little bit more in your conduct. Booing the same team that ensured your past is quickly forgotten and your present provides you with a future to look forward to, only goes to show you are out of touch with reality and living in a very false sense of entitlement.
